When I was researching for the “Non-Toxic Life & Home” segments of the “Essential Oils 101” class that I teach through John A. Logan College, I discovered the dangers of triclosan in hand soaps, toothpaste and other personal care products.
It completely freaked me out!!! I immediately threw out the anti-bacterial hand soaps, toothpastes and other products in our home and replaced them with all-natural products!!!
I learned that as early as 1978, the FDA proposed a rule that would have prohibited triclosan (and other toxic chemicals) from being used in hand soaps because it was NOT SHOWN TO BE SAFE, and not even shown to be effective!!! They didn’t ban the use of triclosan, in fact, they left a loophole, so until the FDA finalized the rule, companies were allowed to continue selling soap and personal care products containing triclosan.
Fast forward 35 years, (Yes, THIRTY-FIVE years!!!) and the FDA has still not finalized the rule so companies are still selling products containing triclosan!!! As a matter of fact, due to successful marketing, the antibacterial soap industry has exploded.
So why is this a problem for your health??? Triclosan, which is used as a bactericide in personal care products such as toothpaste, deodorant, and antibacterial soap, has been linked to heart disease and heart failure. A report done by researchers at the University of California Davis states that triclosan impairs muscle function and skeletal muscle contractility.
A Toxicological Sciences study found that triclosan affected estrogen-mediated responses, and many chemicals that imitate estrogen are known to increase breast cancer risk. Triclosan also suppressed thyroid hormone in rats. There is a growing body of research showing triclosan to be a potent endocrine disrupter.
Since triclosan is found in so many popular personal care products, you are applying a chemical with PROVEN TOXICITY to your body multiple times a day!!!!! Yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that “Triclosan is not currently known to be hazardous to humans.”
After much research, it became obvious to me that ditching antibacterial soaps and other triclosan-containing products can help save your health!!! Our family has replaced the products that we used to purchase with all-natural, essential oil infused products from Young Living. We especially love the Thieves foaming hand soap and toothpaste!!! (Don’t even get me started on the dangers or fluoride!!!!) Not only are these safe products for your family, without any toxic chemicals, you get all the wonderful therapeutic benefits of the essential oils!!! Win-Win!!!
