New Year’s Resolution #1: Manage Feelings of Stress & Anxiety Better

Most of us have to deal with a great amount of stress and anxiety in our daily life, to the point that it can often be overwhelming.

When I have occasional feelings of stress or anxiety, I find that diffusing essential oils is the most effective way to relieve my emotions.

Here are some of my favorite essentials oils to use when I have occasional feelings of stress & anxiety:

• Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
• Rose (Rosa damascena)
• Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)
• Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
• Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
• Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
• Frankincense (Boswellia carteri)

Choose one or more of the essential oils on this list to diffuse.

Start small, just 3-4 drops of EO in your diffuser and see if that helps you feel calmer. You can always turn off the diffuser and add more drops of EO if needed for optimum relaxation.

You can also apply the essential oils topically to your wrists, back of your neck, on your temples, or over your heart to help calm your nerves. When using topically, it’s always wise to DILUTE essential oils at least 50:50 with carrier oil, or at a higher dilution ratio as indicated on the label.

I recommend that you ALWAYS DILUTE essential oils with carrier oil. Diluting with carrier oil ensures that sensitive skin will not have an adverse reaction to the EO. More importantly, always diluting EOs when using topically will help prevent the possibility of developing skin sensitivity in the future.

Here’s MORE INFO for you RESEARCH JUNKIES!!!

Research that is documented in the US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health on PubMed.gov suggests that the inhalation method when using essential oils can be considered an effective intervention that reduces psychological stress responses.

Here are some of the best essentials oils for stress & anxiety:

1. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender oil has a calming, relaxing effect. It’s considered a nervous system restorative and helps with inner peace, sleep, irritability, and restlessness, panic attacks, nervous stomach and general nervous tension.

“The Handbook of Essential Oils: Science, Technology, and Applications, 2nd Edition” states that there have been a number of clinical trials involving the inhalation of lavender essential oil that indicate a reduction in stress and anxiety.

Further research demonstrates lavender’s ability to lower anxiety in patients who are undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery and in people visiting the dentist.

2. Rose (Rosa damascena)

Rose essential oil is very settling to the emotional heart. It is the second most popular essential oil after lavender for relieving anxiety and occasional depression; helps with panic attacks, and is the oil to choose when dealing with grief and shock.

3. Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)

Known in India as the “oil of tranquility”, Vetiver is psychologically grounding, calming, and has stabilizing properties. Vetiver has been valuable for helping people recover from emotional trauma and shock.

A nervous system tonic, Vetiver decreases jitteriness and hypersensitivity and is also useful to help calm your mind during panic attacks.

A study published in “Natural Product Research” examining anxiety-like behavior in rats concluded that Vetiver oil may be useful in lowering anxiety effects.

4. Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

This popular essential oil can be beneficial when dealing with anxiety and depression due to its calming and uplifting effects. Ylang Ylang helps with cheerfulness, courage, optimism and soothes fearfulness. It may calm heart agitation and nervous palpitations and is a moderately strong sedative, which can help with insomnia.

In a 2006 study conducted by Geochang Provincial College in Korea, using Ylang Ylang oil, along with bergamot and lavender oils, once a day for four weeks reduced “psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension.”

When using Ylang Ylang, be careful to always dilute with a carrier oil as it can be sensitizing or irritating to the skin; avoid using Ylang Ylang in conditions of low blood pressure.

5. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

Bergamot is commonly found in Earl Grey tea and has a distinctive floral taste and aroma. Bergamot oil is calming and is often used by those who are experiencing depression. Bergamot can also help with insomnia by reducing agitation and inducing relaxation.

An interesting study conducted in 2011 hypothesizes that applying blended essential oils that includes bergamot and lavender to participants helps in dealing with depression and / or anxiety.

Participants in the blended essential oil group rated themselves as “more calm” and “more relaxed” than the control group.

Bergamot is generally safe, but it is photosensitizing, meaning it can increase the risk of sunburn and rash. It is best to avoid use within 12 hours of sun exposure.

6. Chamomile (matricaria chamomilla)

A peaceful, calming scent, chamomile benefits inner harmony and decreases irritability, overthinking, anxiety and worry.

An explorative study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine on chamomile found that this essential oil “may provide clinically meaningful antidepressant activity that occurs in addition to its previously observed anxiolytic activity.”

Another study published by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health found that chamomile capsules have been shown to ease anxiety symptoms.

Chamomile oil is generally safe, except for a small risk of allergy for anyone who has an allergy to ragweed.

7. Frankincense (Boswellia carteri)

Frankincense is great for dealing with occasional depression and anxiety because it provides a calming and tranquil energy as well as spiritual grounding. In aromatherapy, it helps deepen meditation and quiets the mind.

Mixed with bergamot and lavender oils in a 1:1:1 ratio in an aroma hand massage, frankincense was found to have a positive effect on pain and depression in hospice patients with terminal cancer in a Keimyung University study in Korea.

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR OCCASIONAL FEELINGS OF ANXIETY

When the scent of an essential oil is inhaled, molecules enter the nasal cavities and stimulate a firing of mental response in the limbic system of the brain. These stimulants regulate stress or calming responses, such as heart rate, breathing patterns, production of hormones and blood pressure.

Aromatherapy can be obtained by using EOs mixed with Epsom salts in a bath, as direct inhalations from the EO bottle, hot water vapor, or my favorite way to use essential oils, using my Dew Drop ultra sonic diffuser from Young Living.

Many prefer the topical use of essential oils. When the oils are applied to your skin they penetrate rapidly.

Since they are so potent, it is important to ALWAYS DILUTE with a carrier oil, such as sweet almond, jojoba, olive, avocado or coconut oil.

You can apply the blend directly to an affected area, on the bottoms of the feet, back of your neck, wrists, rims of the ears, in Epsom salt baths or through massage.

RECIPE: Easy Lavender Calming Neck Rub

INGREDIENTS:

1. 3 drops pure lavender oil
2. 1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil or almond oil

DIRECTIONS:

Blend the lavender oil and coconut or almond oil in your palm and rub onto your neck for natural anxiety relief. You can also rub onto the bottoms of your feet. This is perfect for anytime your feeling stress and anxiety, or just before bed.

New Year’s Resolution #2: Drink More Water / Less Soda & Sweet Tea

My husband was a Diet Coke addict. I would tell him how bad Diet Coke was for his body, but he just didn’t care. He would rarely drink a glass of water…until I introduced him to using essential oils in water!!! His favorite EOs to add to his water are peppermint or tangerine. He started drinking water every day and now he rarely orders a Diet Coke!!!

Our favorite essential oils to add to our water are:

• Citrus Fresh (Blend)
• Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi)
• Lemon (Citrus limon)
• Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
• Lime (Citrus aurantifolia)
• Orange (Citrus sinensis)
• Tangerine (Citrus nobilis or Citrus reticulate var. tangerine)
• Peppermint (Mentha piperita) This oil is intense in water!

Of course Young Living essential oils add flavor to your water, but that’s not even the most beneficial aspect of adding EOs to your water. The real value comes with the fact that most of Young Living’s essential oils can assist in detoxifying your body, and most of the oils are both energizing and uplifting!

Here are a few rules I follow when using essential oils in my drinking water:

• Always use glass or stainless steel.
• Pure EOs, especially citrus oils, can quickly degrade plastic, Styrofoam and aluminum which would lead to ingesting plastic, Styrofoam or aluminum particles.
• We only use Young Living’s Vitality line of therapeutic grade essential oils. If you are using other brands of essential oils, just be sure they say GRAS or For Internal Use on the label before using internally.

• Many other brands will say “Do Not Ingest” on their citrus oils. That’s a red flag that the oils is not 100% pure and has been adulterated. Think about it, you can use the whole orange in cooking, including the zest, so why wouldn’t you be able to ingest the oil?
• Not all oils on the market are 100% pure. Just because it’s sold in a health food store doesn’t mean it’s the highest quality.
• There are no FDA standards that require 100% of the volume of liquid in the bottle to be the oil indicated on the label. You could have 90% of the volume be another essential oil, a carrier oil, or be completely synthetic and yet the bottle can still be labeled 100% Pure!

• A little goes a long way!!! When using 100% therapeutic grade oil you may only need 1-2 drops!

Always use glass or stainless steel. When adding essential oils, use a glass, glass water bottle, or stainless steel water bottle for your drinking water. Some essential oils will leach out the petro-chemicals in plastic vessels. You’re trying to make your body healthier, so you don’t want to ingest plastic!!!

Only use therapeutic grade essential oils. Please make sure you are only using oils from a company that sells therapeutic grade essential oils before your ingest any oils. You’ll discover that far too many companies cut their oils with harmful ingredients. I only recommend Young Living Vitality Essential Oils for ingestion. Young Living’s “Seed to Seal” guarantee insures you that you are getting the purest essential oils.

A little goes a long way! We use 1 – 3 drops of essential oil per a 19 oz. glass bottle. It depends on how strong of a flavor you like. I always shake my bottle each time before drinking to distribute the oils throughout the water. I also use the same glass water bottle over and over as some of the oils will cling to the sides and I hate to waste any of those precious oils.

New Year’s Resolution #5: Reduce the Urge to Smoke

Use these essential oils to help you kick the habit!!!

• Black Pepper – Curbs cravings.
• Clove – Reduces desire to smoke.
• Dill – May relieve withdrawal symptoms.
• Juva Tone – Helps break the habit.
• Thieves – Reduces desire to smoke.
• Peppermint – Simulates menthol taste of cigarettes.

Smoking is a multi-faceted habit. You not only become addicted to the nicotine (and the other addictive fillers that may be incorporated into the brand you smoke), but you also develop the habit of raising the cigarette to your mouth and also breathing deeply.

Breathing deeply when stressed is actually a good thing, but let’s make a resolution to do it without that cigarette in your mouth!!!

When you crave a cigarette:

• Place a drop of peppermint or wintergreen (diluted with carrier oil) on the palm of your hand.
• Make a fist and bring it to your mouth, inhale through the “tunnel” in your fish as deeply as if you are taking a puff from a cigarette and then slowly exhale.
• The body movement of raising your fist to your mouth is a gesture somewhat similar to raising a cigarette to the mouth, so that is very helpful.
• When you inhale through the “tunnel” it simulates the feeling of drawing on a cigarette.
• The peppermint essential oil gives you the refreshing taste you’re used to from your menthol cigarettes.

Make Your Own Blends Tailored to Your Specific Needs

Identify what your particular withdrawal symptoms feel like. Do you feel anxious, nervous or angry? Or perhaps during the period of quitting, you feel lethargic.

During efforts to quit smoking, you may want to reach for the uplifting aroma of citrus oils. Their clean smell, especially that of lemon, will help you begin to feel smoke-free more rapidly.

Blends that include especially calming oils like Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage or Ylang Ylang can be helpful with the initial anxiety felt during withdrawal.

Multiple studies have shown essential oils can help you to quit your addiction.

According to Jane Buckle’s Clinical Aromatherapy – Essential Oils in Healthcare, there have been several studies done on the effects of essential oils on nicotine cravings. In the most recent study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 20 people who were daily users of nicotine products (cigarettes, snuff, or chewing tobacco) were asked to try aromatherapy instead.

They were divided into two separate groups and given an essential oil (either black pepper or angelica) and given instructions to place one drop of essential oil on a tissue and inhale this for two minutes (roughly the amount of time it takes to smoke a cigarette) whenever they felt the urge to use tobacco. The test subjects reported back with their experiences and they found that both essential oils effectively curbed cravings, but they provoked different responses.

It was reported that the intensity of their cravings were reduced dramatically after inhaling black pepper essential than they did with angelica essential oil, but inhaling angelica essential oil helped to delay their next nicotine hit for longer than the pepper. Combined, they effectively helped to curb the cravings for longer.

Another study, by Rose and Behm found “the vapor of black pepper essential oil, when inhaled, partially reproduces the respiratory tract sensations experienced when smoking, thereby reducing the craving for cigarettes.”

Essential oils are NOT a cure to your addiction, but can be an AID to help you quit smoking!

It is important to note that I am not giving you a cure-all prescription for quitting.

This “Butt Kicker” aromatherapy blend is designed to help relieve some of the symptoms you might experience while quitting cigarettes, as well as to help uplift the mood, and extend the period of time you can go without a cigarette.

You can use this for both quitting “cold turkey” or while slowly reducing your nicotine intake weekly. This blend is safe to use in conjunction with other nicotine replacement aids (such as the patch or chewing gum). I would not use Chantix with this aromatherapy blend, there is no telling how it might interact.

Butt Kicker – Essential Oil Blend

It is highly recommended to quit smoking if you are pregnant or nursing. If you are pregnant and trying to quit smoking, you can use this blend too! Simply substitute lavender for the clary sage and use half as much as recommended, when diffusing or using topically.

BUTT KICKER BLEND INGREDIENTS

40 drops black pepper essential oil (Piper nigrum)
20 drops clary sage essential oil (Salvia sclarea)
30 drops bergamot essential oil (Citrus bergamia)
30 drops grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi)
10 drops roman chamomile essential oil (Anthemis nobilis)
20 drops sweet marjoram essential oil (Origanum majorana)
24 drops coriander essential oil (Coriandrum sativum)
Empty 15ml essential oil bottle

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine essential oils in a 15 ml amber glass bottle. Swirl the bottle gently to mix. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with carrier oil. Store in a cool dark place with your other essential oils, when not using!

How to use the Butt Kicker essential oil blend:

You could use this blend diluted in a roll-on bottle for topical application, but this blend is most effective using with deep inhalation.

1. Aromatherapy Inhaler – This is my favorite choice for what we’re using this blend for. Aromatherapy Inhalers are perfect to keep on hand in your back pocket or purse, for whenever the need to take a whiff arises! The best part is you’re the only one who smells your personal inhaler, so the essential oils used will not offend anyone around you! To use, place 25-30 drops of the essential oil blend into a small glass bowl. Add the cotton pad to the bowl and roll it around (using tweezers, not bare fingers) until it’s soaked up all the essential oils. Using tweezers, remove pad and place in inhaler tube. After closing the inhaler tube, be sure to label it so that you don’t forget which blend it is! You can pull the inhaler out and take a few deep inhalations for up to 2 minutes (the amount of time it roughly takes to smoke a cigarette) whenever you are feeling a craving.

2. Smelling Salts – This is just another way to keep a sniffer around with you on-the-go. In a 10 ml (1/3 oz.) glass bottle, add 30 drops of Butt Kicker essential oil blend and fill the remainder of the bottle with either fine or coarse sea salt. Waft the bottle under your nose while taking deep inhalations for up to 2 minutes (the amount of time it roughly takes to smoke a cigarette), whenever you feel a craving.

3. Diffuser – This blend works really well in the diffuser when you are at home or in your office. Using the recommended amount of drops for your diffuser, diffuse this blend throughout the space that you are occupying. Diffuse for 30 minutes ON and 60 minutes OFF so as not to get oiled out!

Are you ready to try quitting? You can do it!!!

Black Pepper Essential Oil

I haven’t found a significant amount of empirical evidence that documents what essential oils may help curb nicotine addition. However, in her book Aromatherapy Science, Maria Lis-Balchin mentions a small study that may indicate that cigarette cravings may be decreased by inhaling Black Pepper Essential Oil.

Studies showed that essential oil of black pepper significantly reduced craving for a 3-hour session.

Inhalation of vapor from black pepper extract reduces smoking withdrawal symptoms. Rose JE, Behm FM.Nicotine Research Laboratory (151-S), V.A. Medical Center, Durham, NC 27705.

Previous studies have suggested that sensory cues associated with cigarette smoking can suppress certain smoking withdrawal symptoms, including craving for cigarettes. In this study we investigated the subjective effects of a cigarette substitute delivering a vapor of black pepper essential oil. Forty-eight cigarette smokers participated in a 3-h session conducted after overnight deprivation from smoking. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: one group of smokers puffed on a device that delivered a vapor from essential oil of black pepper; a second group puffed on the device with a mint/menthol cartridge, and a third group used a device containing an empty cartridge. Subjects puffed and inhaled ad libitum from the device throughout the session during which no smoking was allowed. Reported craving for cigarettes was significantly reduced in the pepper condition relative to each of the two control conditions. In addition, negative affect and somatic symptoms of anxiety were alleviated in the pepper condition relative to the unflavored placebo. The intensity of sensations in the chest was also significantly higher for the pepper condition. These results support the view that respiratory tract sensations are important in alleviating smoking withdrawal symptoms. Cigarette substitutes delivering pepper constituents may prove useful in smoking cessation treatment
