Today is my little sister Melba’s 40th birthday!!! (I’m not quite sure how that is possible. I was almost 14 when she was born and I’m sure that I’m not near old enough for my little sister to be 40 years old!!!)
Last night my brother-in-law Jay had a surprise party for Melba. He asked all of us to wear black, now I don’t think 40 is quite old enough to warrant a black theme, but it was his party, so I went along with the theme when I made Melba’s card.
And just like the party, the card is a surprise! The card front is very clean & simple….no hint that there’s a PARTY INSIDE!!!
I used a 5.25″ x 4″ piece of Stampin’ Up!’s “Night & Day” Designer Series Paper (Retired), which I cut it into two pieces, flipping one piece over to use the design on the other side. One of the things I love about Stampin’ Up!’s Designer Series Papers is that they are double-sided with designs that coordinate perfectly.
When you slide the belly-band off the card……
SURPRISE…it’s PARTY TIME!!!
I used the small oval punch to punch out 40 balloons from Basic Black card stock, Silver Glimmer paper & Silver Glimmer paper that has been sponge-dyed with Basic Black ink. The bottom of the balloons are actually the “feet” from my favorite punch, Stampin’ Up!’s Owl Builder punch!

She loved it!!! And I love her!!!
Our family was so blessed when she came into our lives forty years ago. Melba is a dear daughter, a super sister, a fabulous friend, a wonderful wife and a marvelous Mother.
Mom & Dad with their Darling Daughter! Isn’t my Mom so beautiful?!?!?!
One of her favorite gifts was from Jolene! Thanks Jolene, you made her cry! Yay!
Melba is an amazing woman and I am so proud to be her big sister!
Join me in wishing Melba a very HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY and a life filled with…..
Peace, Love & Joy,
Joyce

Hi Sharon,
Thank you soooo much for your sweet comments!!! I do love her so much so it was a work of love, BUT, until Stampin’ Up! comes out with a balloon punch that has the little part at the bottom I won’t be making a card with 40 balloons again!!! Too many tiny pieces! Thank goodness for that little Owl Builder punch, it is so versatile and his feet were perfect for the balloons!
Peace, Love & Joy,
Joyce
Wonderful card! I love the elegance of white, black and grey. Too bad that paper is retired–I could think of several cards I’d love to make with it. 🙂
Hi Heidi,
Thanks for your kind comments. I was so lucky to still have some of the Night & Day DSP in my stash, it was perfect for this card. I was hoping that it was available as a digital download in My Digital Studio so I could recommend it to customers, but couldn’t find it there. I think that I will leave a comment in Stampin’ Up!’s sandbox that it would be a good addition to their digital download library.
Peace, Love & Joy,
Joyce

Joyce, your card was beautiful. 40 balloons, most of them dyed to the perfect color. Your attention to detail is what makes your cards spectacular!

Wow! That has to be one of the best-written tutorials I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing, Joyce. 🙂 I’m so glad you added it to this post.
Oh my gosh, thanks so much Heidi for saying that!!!
I really put a lot of time into my tutorials and try to make sure everything is spelled out clearly so even new stampers can follow the directions. If you see any typos or if something isn’t clear, please let me know so I can make improvements.
Again, thanks so very, very much for your wonderful comment!!!
Peace, Love & Joy,
Joyce
